From Menands Basketball Athletic Director, Ed Malone:
Recently, my best friend Phil passed away. Phil battled five different cancers over the last ten years of his life. He was
4-1 against the disease. He was a fighter with amazing courage and resiliency. I got to see first-hand how the disease impacts the victim, their families and friends.
When asked if Menands Youth Basketball would join a local fundraiser for Coaches vs. Cancer, I contacted our coaches and am pleased that we are able to participate. My friend Phil loved the sport. He followed Menands Basketball successes over the years and also traveled to watch my daughter Sara Malone who played on the first Menands girls basketball team… play during her college basketball career in Florida. I’m dedicating my involvement in the event to Phil.
Joining me as player/coach on the court are the following current and former Menands Basketball coaches: Ron Mattice, Chuck Price, John Murphy, Steve O’Connell, Joe Carreccia, Alex Domberg, T.J. Coates, Don Mannion, Mike Case and Mike Mayo.
The fundraising event will donate all admission and 50/50 raffle proceeds to the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. Catholic High is donating the gym and the referees have all volunteered their time.
The Menands Coaches and I are asking for your support. Because some of us are a little out of shape and haven’t had lots of time to practice….we need a sixth player on the court….We can do this by having lots of fans come out and watch us play…and cheer us on!
If you cannot make the game(s), I ask that you send a check payable to American Cancer Society to me at:
E. Malone 36 Park Drive, Albany, NY 12204
You can also do both….come to the game and bring or mail a small donation.
